Glass Restoration is an effective solution for damaged, stained, stage 1 corrosion glass. The process (best left to a professional) involves the use of potentially hazardous (if misused) chemicals, face masks, eye goggles, protective gloves, (and in some cases) power tools. Stage 2 corrosion glass may not be restored simply because neglect has resulted in permanent etching.
Glass is porous, hydrophilic, and collects all elements of nature thrown it's way.
Exterior glass corrosion may occur within months when placed near swimming pools, sprinkler systems, or cooking grills. Building (home) interior glass corrosion is enhanced by constant moisture levels. Chandelier moisture levels average 6-8% at all times. Moisture levels increase in bath and shower rooms and on floors higher than first floor. Leaving lights on unattended for long periods of time attributes to higher moisture levels, dust levels, insect collection, and glass corrosion even in well air conditioned environments.
Restoration (an alternative to expensive glass replacement) involves restoring clarity to glass etched by:
chemical service applications (previous)
oxidation from screens
chlorine overspray from pool cleaning snake
sprinkler system misplacement (too close to window)
salt spray (coastal areas)
chemical overspray
brick, wood resin, stucco and facade runoff
tree or vine resin
environmental pollutants
stucco and construction abrasives
sun baked alkali and mineral deposits
concrete sealing acids
air conditioning (where heat meets cold)
moisture levels within building or home
insect extermination spray
acid rain
hard water contaminants in local tap water
sun baked paint runoff
cooking grills misplaced (too close to window)
neglect
After the glass cleaning process is complete, I will note these areas of damaged glass to the property owner. There is a test to determine if glass is in stage 1 corrosion or stage 2 corrosion. I am qualified to complete the restoration process if property owner so chooses to proceed. It is not cost free, but certainly cost-effective as compared to replacement of glass. Glass Restoration is discussed with property owner when completing the initial paperwork.
Homeowners (or building owners) may deter glass etching by cleaning windows or chandeliers or lighting professionally at least once per year. Homeowners who enjoy pools placed near windows (or sprinkler systems near windows) or live in coastal homes would be wise to clean exterior windows at least every 6 months.
